| | Description | Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history.
Nine-year-old Oskar Schell has embarked on an urgent, secret mission that will take him through the five boroughs of New York. His goal is to find the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts on an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey. | |

Do not waste your time or money Sep 05, 2010 I have never not finished a book....but I am not even half way and I can not take it anymore. I wish I had read the reviews first. I have seen a press release that this story will be made into a movie with Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks. That sucked me in. A MOVIE.......REALLY. I will pass on that too.
Astonishing Sep 04, 2010 I have not felt compelled to write a review on Amazon.com until now. This book is extraordinary. A unique, brave and inspirational voice that is making me think about what literature is capable of.
extremely incredible. Aug 05, 2010 This book changed my life. I couldn't put it down. It's unique and well-written and extraordinary.
Worth TEN stars! Aug 03, 2010 What to say about this book! 5 stars are simply not enough. Jonathan Safran Foer has taken literature and writing to whole new heights. The courage he has shown in the textured layers of this book is gutsy and gut-wrenching. The voice he gives to Oskar Schell, the nine-year-old sometime-narrater of this wonderful and unique novel is at once compelling, funny and heartbreaking. Oskar's father was killed in 9/11, and through actions that many would call odd, this obsessive/compulsive child tries to get close to a man who left him too soon. And in one scene, an overwhelmed Oskar goes into his father's closets, notes the last outfit he wore--a tuxedo, smells his clothes, looks through his pockets, and inside a blue vase, up high on a shelf, he finds an envelope. With a key inside, And the name 'Black' written on the outside. Oskar sets out, through the five burroughs of New York City, determined to visit every person named 'Black' in order to get closer to his father, maybe learn how he died. There is so much to this book, told through Oskar, through letters written before Oskar's time, and through the stories of the many people he meets on this journey. This book is a visual and literary journey that will turn your head around. Foer takes extreme chances with different mediums to tell the many tales of tragedy and triumph, loss and survival, using the page as a canvas rather than simply paper with margins. Brave and brilliant! Bravo, bravo, bravo!
Happy Jul 28, 2010 Good book. Originally bought for a class but I have to say that I very much so enjoy the book.
